Overview: 2015 Annual Compliance Institute
In a special edition of Compliance Today, Bret Bissey provided a featured overview of the 2015 Annual Compliance Institute in Orlando, Florida earlier this year.
As a compliance veteran who has attended over 16 of the 19 HCCA Annual Compliance Institutes it was easy to conclude this year’s event was an overwhelming success. I’ve held multiple positions throughout my career but always find time for this conference. Whether attending as a Chief Compliance Office, consultant or vendor I’ve found HCCA to be the premiere healthcare compliance event of the year and one that I look forward to attending.
One of the great things about the Institute is the opportunity to meet with old friends and those new to the industry. In presenting this year with Sean McKenna and Ken Zeko, we had an audience of over 350 and received numerous extremely positive interactions. But even more impactful to me was the enthusiasm evident at the session. We could tell there were many newcomers to the industry who were interested in hearing compliance stories from three veterans.
Successful Speed Networking/Mentoring Sessions
I also had the opportunity to participate in the Speed Networking and Speed Mentoring interactions. This was a nice venue to meet fellow professionals in the compliance space. Even though the Networking session was held bright and early on Sunday morning there was a very impressive turnout of individuals interested in making new industry contacts. I attend these sessions because in my career I have always placed a tremendous value on making connections in the industry. I found the mentoring session to be an excellent opportunity to offer some advice and share expertise with new industry colleagues. If you are a compliance veteran and haven’t offered your services at this event, I’d suggest you try it next year. It is always good to give back to the industry and help guide our future healthcare compliance leaders.
Bring Home Lessons Learned I encourage those that attended to bring what you learned from the conference to your organizations and be creative with “pushing the envelope” to create proactive and effective compliance programs. Use the experiences you gained at HCCA to actively challenge those compliance naysayers in your organization. Hopefully, your compliance energies are now recharged to take on the challenges that lie ahead of you in the upcoming year.
Thank you to the HCCA team for another great conference. I look forward to seeing many of you throughout the year and next year for our 20th conference in Las Vegas!
